What is MMP-3?

Because MMP-3 is produced by synovial cells and chondrocytic cells, and its specific substrate is proteoglycan, which consists of cartilage, it is being studied as an enzyme that may be involved in the destruction of articular tissues in articular rheumatism (RA). Generally, synovial membranes exhibit an inflammatory reaction and proliferate as the RA status progresses. With this growth of the membranes, MMP-3 is developed and produced in lamellar synovial cells. Its matrix decomposition action is thought to cause articular destruction. MMP-3 produced in lamellar synovial cells is stored in joint fluids, and transferred into blood via blood vessels or lymph vessels. This is a possible scheme underlying the increase of the MMP-3 level in blood.

Because of this behavior of MMP-3 in the body, the MMP-3 level in blood has the potential for becoming a prognostic indicator or predictor of outgrowths of synovial membranes in early RA and joint destruction.
