Intended Use
Procalcitonin is a precursor protein of the calcium-regulating hormone calcitonin. It has a molecular weight of 13 kDa and is composed of 3 fragments (N terminal, calcitonin, and katacalcin). Under physiological conditions, it is synthesized by C cells of the thyroid gland and secreted into the blood after being cleaved to form calcitonin. When severe bacterial infection occurs, inflammatory cytokines are produced due to the effects of the causative organisms and toxins, stimulating the production/secretion of procalcitonin by multiple organs.
