Overview
Lupus Anticoagulant (LA) is an autoimmune antibody that mistakenly targets certain proteins in the blood. Despite its name, it is not related to lupus or anticoagulation in the traditional sense. Instead, it is associated with an increased risk of thrombosis.
LA can be present in individuals with autoimmune disorders like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) but also occurs in people without any underlying health conditions.
Clinical relevance
- Thrombosis: The primary concern with LA is the higher risk of developing thrombosis in veins and arteries. This can lead to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, or stroke.
- Pregnancy complications: Women with LA may experience recurrent miscarriages, stillbirths, or other pregnancy-related issues.
- Other Symptoms: Some people may experience headaches, migraines, or balance problems due to the clotting issues.
Diagnosis
LA is diagnosed through blood tests that detect the presence of the antibodies. These tests often include:
- Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT)
- Dilute Russell’s Viper Venom Time (dRVVT)
- Cross mixing tests
Proprietary concept allowing measuring samples taken during Warfarin treatment
- Background:
Warfarin antagonizes the effects of vitamin K and inhibits hepatic biosynthesis of blood clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X, thereby preventing blood clotting. If factors II and X are low and coagulating is impaired, LA false-positives may occur. - Concept:
Since in our product factor II and factor X are added to the sample diluent (Replenishing factor II and factor X), Sekisui Coagpia LA’s reagent formulation is not affected by warfarin medication.
